I am very pleased to announce and congratulate Mr Malcom Schyvens, who has been appointed as the inaugural President of the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (TasCAT).
Mr Schyvens has exceptional experience as the current Deputy President of the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT), and Head of NCAT’s Guardianship Division, and has also held a variety of related roles in both NSW and Tasmania.
His previous roles include President, (2011-2013) and Deputy President (2008-2011) of the Guardianship Tribunal of NSW, and Legal Member of Tasmania’s Guardianship and Administration Board (2003-2008) and Forensic Tribunal (2007-2008).
Prior to this, Mr Schyvens completed his university studies and commenced his career in legal practice in Tasmania at Dobson Mitchell and Allport. He was subsequently Managing Partner of Ogilvie Jennings, Barristers and Solicitors. He is also a former President of the Law Society of Tasmania (2007-2008).
Currently, he is Chair of the Australian Guardianship and Administration Council (AGAC), National Secretary of the Council of Australasian Tribunals (COAT), a Committee Member of Elder Law and Succession Committee of the Law Society of NSW, and is a Member of the Cultural Diversity Justice Network.
Mr Schyvens was appointed to the role of TasCAT President following an extensive, national recruitment process, and will take up his role on 17 May 2021 ahead of the TasCAT commencing operations later this year. He has been appointed to the role for a period of seven years.
Mr Schyvens returns to Tasmania, coming to the role with extensive relevant experience and skills, as well as a strong legal background, and is well placed to lead TasCAT through both its establishment and operations.
