Communications experts are being invited to submit an expression of interest for appointment as a witness intermediary as part of our pilot scheme designed to improve access to justice for children and vulnerable witnesses.
The Pilot Intermediary Scheme is planned to be introduced in March 2021 to enable the use of witness intermediaries or communications experts by Tasmania Police and in Tasmanian courts.
Intermediaries will work alongside lawyers, judges and others in the criminal justice system to ensure that children and vulnerable witnesses are supported to effectively participate in the criminal justice process.
The Scheme has been established in direct response to the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in its Criminal Justice Report and the work of the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute in its 2018 report, Facilitating Equal Access to Justice: An Intermediary/Communication Scheme for Tasmania.
The establishment of the Intermediary Scheme provides an exciting new opportunity for appropriately qualified professionals to utilise their skills in the criminal justice system.
Information for people interested in applying is available on the Department of Justice website.
