The Tasmanian Government is working with the community to deliver a replacement Burnie Court complex, which is fit for purpose and enables the efficient and effective operation of the Supreme and Magistrates Courts, as well as meeting local expectations.

The Expression of Interest (EOI) process to identify potential sites for a replacement Court complex in the Burnie CBD has been finalised by the Department of Treasury and Finance.

We have considered the EOI report and three CBD sites will now be the subject of further investigations.

These sites are located at:

  • 39-41 Alexander Street and 54-56 Mount Street;
  • 100-106 Wilson Street; and
  • a third site that remains confidential at the request of the proponent.

The Department of Justice will now move quickly to start work with these proponents to determine the final project scope, assess the potential reuse of existing buildings, and prepare a cost estimate for development of each site.

This will then allow the Department to make a fully informed assessment of the value proposition on any of these sites compared to the Mooreville Road site.

I look forward to continuing to work with the community and seeing the next steps progress over the coming months, to enable this important project to proceed as soon as possible.

Elise Archer, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice
